From adakkak at eng.utoledo.edu Wed Jan 30 14:42:10 2008 From: adakkak at eng.utoledo.edu (Abdulmajed Dakkak) Date: Wed Jan 30 14:42:18 2008 Subject: [talug-murch] What Happened to the Mailing List? Message-ID: As some of you may have noticed, the mailing list was "down" for around 30 days; the following details the events the caused the down time as well as the actions that were taken. 12/29/07 Scott Vargovich informs me that there was something wrong with the TALUG mailing list. I ask him to try it again on the next day. 12/30/07 Scott gets the same problem, and I inform the mailing list administrators that the mailing list is down. Out of sheer luck, this also happens to be the time when people are on holiday. 1/6/08 After the holiday, people start checking their email and we begin to wonder what the problem is. 1/12/07 Adam Shea contacts Unique Systems about the problem, and is informed that there was a distributed denial of service attack on the server. Expectation was that mailman should be back up shortly. Mailman did go back up, but was unable to deliver to some email addresses. This issue was slow to diagnose because some people received email and figured the list was functioning properly, while those who didn't figured the list was still down from the DDOS attack. The root cause of the problem was unknown. 1/28/07 The problem was found to be a GMail address that is stalling mailman. 1/29/07 The problem is fixed (by just removing the email) and the TALUG list was restored. Note that at no point was the mailing list was down for a significant amount of time, rather the issue only affected GMail users. So what caused the problem and why did it take too long? It was a combination of a lack of understating of mailman administration (on my part), a random attack, a bad timing, and an awkward bug. I would like to thank the guys at Unique Systems for finding and fixing the problem. P.S. There will be an "Intro to Linux" meeting this Thursday @6:00PM in North Engineering 1026 (University of Toledo). UT ACM is also partnering with UT IEEE to give an "Intro to Python" presentation this Friday @5:00PM in Nitschke 2004 (University of Toledo). I hope to see people there. Now, onto the new website Just in time for the March 1st meeting, the new TALUG website has been launched. The new website is: easier to manage, and provides many new features; such as: * Browseable Member Profiles -- You can post your picture and fill in relevant information that others can see. You can also browse through other TALUG members' profiles. * Forums -- You can now post questions and search for older posts. * Private Messaging -- You can contact people via the new website without emailing them. * Event Calendar -- Easily keep track of upcoming TALUG events. * Searchable Content -- Now it's easier to find the information you want from the TALUG website. * And more (as we continue to learn more) In order to protect your privacy, most features (such as viewing member profiles) are only available for registered users. In addition, eventually the TALUG mailman email lists will be integrated with the new site so that you can manage everything from your talug.org account. So be sure to sign up to get the most out of our new website. Keep in mind that the new website is a work in progress. We are still in the process of migrating the past events pages, so those are temporarily unavailable. Additionally, there may be bugs in the new website. Be sure to email us at officers [at] talug.org if you have ideas for new features or find any mistake on the site. If you would like to learn more about the new website, or help develop it, come to the March 1st meeting! Finally, we would like to remind everyone that the deadline for TALUG officer nominations is March 1st.
